"Hamish there haven’t been too many days since you left us that I haven’t thought about the great times we shared playing cricket and footy from grade 6 at Princes, to water skiing at Silver Sands, to messing about at Scott’s Creek. Still remember the day you said you were getting in to rowing, well I suppose that worked out ok. You will not be forgotten.
Sandy, Malcolm, Alastair, Sam and Dougal, the Hosking family’s thoughts and prayers are with you.

"There was a surprise announcement one morning as we gathered for another morning training row as part of the 1987/88 AIS men’s heavyweight squad. A re-election of the pair combinations effective immediately. I was a new kid on the block, tall, skinny and in need of building strength. I was to row with Hamish - already seasoned and from memory the strongest rower in the country. From the first stroke it felt amazing. All I had to do was follow Hamish from the bow seat and not allow his strength to pull the bow around with his power. I was like a jockey, making calls for efforts that he could and would just respond to. An amazing feeling in a boat that I loved and reflect on regularly. Loved rowing with you Hamish. Always hoped I’d catch up with you again some day. Sad that I won’t."

"Three memories of Hamish stand out. One, when he and bunk-mates at a Scots Creek Camp shaved my eyebrow when I was asleep. Makes me wonder why he had a shaver at a school camp. Two, after a regatta in the family ski boat at 90 km/h-plus on the Murray, at the wheel with a look of delight when scaring his crew-mates, at least me, as the boat maintained an unhealthy lurch from side-to-side. Three, well that one is really just for the people that were there on that night. One of the best! With love to the McLachlan Family."

"Dear Samantha and Dougal,
I rowed with Hamish in the 80's in Canberra and overseas. A highlight of this time was winning the national coxless 4 in Adelaide, making all of SA rowing rightly very proud.
In all the time I raced with Hamish and against him, I never heard him say a bad word against his crew or competitors. This is a true and remarkable reflection on what a great athlete and person he was.
He was a tough racer and a kind person, gone too soon.
Deepest Condolence
