Guestbook

"I only got to know Ray a few years ago when the late Peter Trumble and a team of volunteers at Scotch College were trying to recognize all those that served in our Armed Forces after WW2. As we met, I realized that Ray treasured his connection to Scotch and while the bulk of his service was at Saints, he wanted the best outcomes and was gracious and generous with his advice. I was touched by his gentleness and his genteelness and was reminded that Ray represented the best of what independent school education is all about. His life was about service and transforming young people and he will be much missed."

"A gentleman, fine teacher and a key member of the Cadet Corps staff during my years at Scotch (1952-56). He and Val were omnipresent at College events. A life well lived."

"A man of the greatest honour and integrity, who truly knew how to teach the difference between right and wrong. He had an abiding belief in all the 'boys' he taught, and he instilled enduring qualities in all of us. He was a 'maker of men'. I hope 'Shep' is loyally by his side once more. May he rest in peace. He will never be forgotten."

"Ray's death brings much sadness - but I remember him with gratitude and admiration. He was both Deputy Head and Chemistry teacher to my two sons at Saints, Karl and Detlef Kirsten, and their lives are richer for his expert teaching, compassionate humanity and mentoring."
